  • Culture and museums offer variety in any weather

Nuremberg - This year too, masses of travelers will flock to German cities. The tourism is booming in this country and recorded every year new records, of which smaller cities such as Nuremberg benefit.

Nuremberg old town: time travel to the Middle Ages

It's been a long timeNuremberg is no longer an insider tip for foreign tourists, so the city with 515,000 inhabitants made the leap into the top 10 most visited German cities. But what is special to see here?

The old town with its historic buildings is particularly noteworthy . The three most famous churches in particular are worth visiting.

The Gothic Lorenzkirche is more than 700 years old with 750,000 annual visitors. The Frauenkirche is just as impressive as it is historic with its "running in men", a kind of carillon on the tower music box that inspires tourists and local onlookers every lunchtime at 12 noon. Less than 300 meters away is the impressive Sebalduskirche, which is even known as the tomb of its namesake, the city patron St. Sebald of Nuremberg.

Nuremberg's sights: Franconian cuisine in the shadow of the Imperial Castle

The many churches from the Middle Ages are not the only indication that Nuremberg was an impressive city a few centuries ago. The imperial castle not only rises above the city center in terms of height. It is the symbol of the city and was first mentioned in documents 970 years ago, in 1050. It can be visited 360 days a year and, according to an online survey, is one of the most visited places in Bavaria.

But the city also has a lot to offer in culinary terms as the home of the grilled sausages and gingerbread, which also attracts tourists. Even if centuries-old restaurants such as the Bratwursthäusle are struggling to survive, many traditional restaurants can still be found. The most popular dishes such as Schäufele, “Drei im Weggla” or baked carp can be found in almost every Franconian restaurant. After a tour of the Imperial Castle, the restoration is not far, because right next door is a restaurant with a vaulted cellar that serves all kinds of Bohemian specialties.

Nuremberg museums offer a lot of variety

Those interested in the Middle Ages can also visit the underground rock passages. These were built and used for brewing beer from the Middle Ages, but acted as a protective bunker during the Second World War.

With the Albrecht Dürer House, the Toy Museum and the Germanic National Museum , three well-known museums can be found right in the city center and are extremely popular. The Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds is located just outside the city  on the old grounds of the original Nazi building and is the most important post-war Nuremberg museum.

The visit is particularly worthwhile in the winter months, when the numerous parks, such as the castle garden or the Hesperid Gardens , close their gates. In addition, the "Future Museum" is to be created as a Nuremberg branch for the German Museum in Munich from 2020.

Nuremberg: Special offers for tourists are easy on the wallet

Especially for visitors to the city, the city issues the so-called "Nuremberg Card", which can be used not only for local transport. Admission to many sights  is included in the price.

And those who have had enough of the hustle and bustle of the old town will find peace and quiet on a walk along the Pegnitz, for example on the island of Schütt, the largest river island in the city. However, one should not hope for any parallels with the eponymous TV show from the romantic love island.
