His radio career is peppered with programs that WDR-4 listeners in particular are likely to remember deeply. But Charly Wagner also had his say on television: he regularly read "Classics of Men's Jokes" * on the "Harald Schmidt Show". He also worked for WDR-TV for many years.

Charly Wagner was born in Cologne in 1941 . His radio career began in September 1953, when he was just twelve years old and participated in the radio play "I knew the voice". His fee: five deutschmarks. Although his task was limited to creating background murmurs with other students from a Cologne high school, it was now clear to him where he would later make his money: on the radio.

However, he did not immediately land on the radio, but only took the detour via the job of an insurance agent . He then completed a speaker training course at Deutsche Welle , where he worked for a short time as an assistant director.

In August 1965, after a year as a freelancer, his permanent position on the radio of the WDR began as a news anchor and announcer. In 1973 he began to moderate radio programs, including  "At home and on the go" with Max Schautzer .

In the WDR communication, he is recognized as “the voice” of WDR 4. He became one with programs such as "Music Pavilion", "Swing and Ballads", "Orchestra of the World" and "Shellack-Schätzchen".

Charly Wagner worked as an announcer on WDR television in the 1980s . In addition, he was involved in a legendary "television scandal" in 1994. After a satire about allegedly manipulated lottery draws in the political magazine "Monitor", the then Federal Minister of Finance Theo Waigel demanded that the responsible WDR employees should be "chased to the devil". But that didn't happen. In 2004 Charly Wagner retired after 39 years of service at WDR. At the "Harald Schmidt Show", he stayed with TV viewers.

The grief is great not only among fans of the radio legend, but also among his colleagues and companions. Even Valerie Weber , program director NRW, knowledge and culture, pays tribute to him: "The voice Charly Wagner - a cultivated baritone - was almost 40 years a hallmark of the West German Radio," said Weber. Radio programs like "Swing and Ballads" and "Shellack-Schätzchen" are "unforgettable". 

Weber also remembers Wagner's TV appearances: “And anyone who remembers the times in North Rhine-Westphalia when there were still program announcers will always think of Charly Wagner. We are sad that we have lost a valued colleague and fine person and will have to go back to recordings from now on if we want to hear his voice again. ”
