In 2014, the Government issued the "Railway Development Strategy 2014" to recommend the construction of the South Extension of Tuen Mun. It was mentioned in the Policy Address last year that MTR will be invited to carry out detailed planning and design of the South Extension of Tuen Mun in the coming year. The Chief Executive in Council has approved the detailed planning and design of the government's invitation to the MTR for relevant projects.

A spokesman for the Housing Authority said today (29th) that the Tuen Mun South Extension will extend 2.4 kilometers south from the West Rail Line Tuen Mun Station, and a new Tuen Mun South Station will be set up near Tuen Mun Ferry Pier An additional halfway station is set up in the 16th district. The cost of materials is estimated to be about 28 billion yuan in 2015. It is expected to start construction in 2023 and be completed in 2030.

The southern extension of Tuen Mun is mainly constructed along the Tuen Mun River to improve the railway services in the southern community of Tuen Mun City Centre including Lakeview Village, Siu Hei Court and Yuehu Villa. The Tuen Mun South Extension will have two additional stations, namely, Tuen Mun South Station near Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, and a halfway station in Tuen Mun District 16.

The Transport Bureau expects that there will be approximately 60,000 residents within the 500-meter service area of ​​Tuen Mun South Station; and approximately 49,000 residents within the 500-meter service area of ​​the proposed 16th district station. At the same time, during the 50-year operating period, the Tuen Mun South Extension is estimated to save the public a total of about 300 million hours of travel time. Its economic benefits, including the value of the time saved above, are calculated at 2015 prices of about 28 billion .
