  • Several bottles in Munich supermarkets  were with poison added.
  • Now the police have arrested a suspicious woman.
  • Investigators have released further details.

4.35 p.m .: Investigators blame a 56-year-old for poisoning attacks with manipulated drinks bottles in Munich supermarkets. Her DNA was found on bottles and payment with an EC card shows that she was shopping in one of the  shops  , said Josef Wimmer, Head of Criminal Investigation Department 11 of the Munich police, on Saturday.

Because the woman had a massive mental illness and, according to an expert, would remain dangerous without treatment, she was initially put into a psychiatric ward, said prosecutor Laurent Lafleur. Because she was insidious and had to expect death, the investigators accused the woman of four times attempted murder.

Your motive is unclear. "She does not want to provide any information or the information she provides is not understandable," said Wimmer. The suspect has noticed the information earlier, among other things because of swastika smearings. Lafleur said that current actions are also being examined against this "somewhat disturbing background". However, the investigators did not currently assume that they had a right-wing background.

According to the public prosecutor's office, all previous proceedings were terminated because it was assumed that the Munich woman was not culpable due to her mental illness. The woman is also suspected of having set fire to a Catholic church in Munich and a self-help organization in the city this year. One time she is said to have placed a chicken leg, said Wimmer.

The investigators did not provide further information on the poison in order to avoid counterfeiting. It could also be that there are two substances. One of them caused a bitter taste, so that people would have spat out immediately.

Munich: woman is said to have poisoned beverage bottles outside the shops

The woman is said to have poisoned the soft drinks outside the shops and put them back on the shelf when shopping. In a search on Friday evening, none of the fabrics were found in her apartment, but among other things many bottles and a cut newspaper article about the case. However, the 56-year-old has so far not given any information, for example, whether there are other poisoned products in circulation, said Wimmer.

According to the current status, however, no further manipulated bottles have appeared. 40 stores were checked, in which the suspect is said to have bought. The warning is therefore withdrawn. However, customers should pay attention to whether the ring on the bottle cap is intact and whether there is a striking taste or smell, said Wimmer. There is also no evidence of accomplices. He spoke of a "socially isolated woman".

It was difficult for the investigators that there was no threatening letter, no extortion or the like as with other food poisoning. The supermarket chains and beverage manufacturers concerned were also different.

Munich: Poisoned drinks found in supermarket

Update of June 3, 2020: A day after the Munich police went public with the report about poisoned drinks in supermarkets in the west of Munich, there are still no new findings. It does not name the affected markets, nor exactly what drinks are involved. The police are also silent about the solvent used, which was found in the bottles.

However, it is still important to be careful when buying  beverage bottles that could have been manipulated. If the locking ring on the screw cap is damaged or there is contamination on the bottle, the police will ask you to report below 110.

Munich: Poisoned drinks found in supermarkets - police forcefully warn

First report from June 2, 2020: Munich - Anyone currently buying drinks in Munich must be careful: there is a risk to life. The police issue an urgent warning to citizens to be careful - because in two supermarkets in the west of Munich , deadly poison has been discovered in beverage bottles! The police investigate attempted murder and look for witnesses.

To date, the team of the 22-member “Tox” special commission has known four specific cases: In March and April , three Munich-based soft drinks were bought, which were mixed with solvents. A contaminated bottle also appeared later.

Munich: Poisoned drinks - customers complain of dizziness and nausea after consumption

These manipulated drinks bottles were placed on the store shelves. In three cases, these bottles were purchased by customers and consumed in small quantities. All three people affected (a 34-year-old, a 42-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man, all from Munich) complained of dizziness , nausea and circulatory problems after consumption

Already the smell was strange and when they drank a few sips they noticed a strange taste. In one of the drinks there was also a milky substance on the bottom of the bottle . The two women had to be treated immediately in the hospital. All three complained of dizziness, nausea and circulatory problems after consumption. In the meantime, those affected are doing well again, but they were lucky! "If they had drunk the entire bottle, they would have died," said police spokesman Werner Kraus.

The investigation also showed that a fourth bottle was found to have been manipulated before it was sold. Based on current knowledge, the investigation was carried out by Commissioner 11 of the Munich police . The allegation is attempted murder

He does not want to reveal which solvent it is - out of concern for imitators. The investigators do not want to disclose exactly which food markets are involved. Just so much: “There are different retail chains . We therefore do not assume that the perpetrator (s) are targeting a specific chain, ”explains Kraus. In contrast, it is always the same soft drink - which, the police are currently still open. "Any drink can be affected," warns Kraus.

Munich: drinks with poison: motive completely unclear

The biggest problem: the motive is still completely unclear . "So far there have been no demands or anything similar that would reveal a goal," says Kraus. And that is exactly what makes things so tricky: The perpetrators could strike anywhere - in all of Munich and with every drink! Immediately after the first incidents, the police started an extensive investigation. The officers found a fourth poisoned drink in one of the two supermarkets - just in time before anyone could buy it. "The investigations and analyzes of the substance took some time, which is why we are only now turning to the public," says Kraus.

In the past, a blackmailer in Constance tried to put supermarkets under pressure with poisoned foods.

Munich: Police warn of further poison drinks

Warning message : It is strongly recommended to pay attention to the integrity of the circlip when buying beverage bottles with screw caps. In some cases, visible contamination was found on the four bottles identified so far . When opening a bottle , a noticeable smell can be perceived here. The taste has been described by the people affected so far as bitter and artificial-chemical. If the bottle is suspicious , the substance should not be disposed of, but the police emergency number 110 should be informed immediately.
