(CNN) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) says a surveillance video appears to show a man aiming a taser at an Atlanta police officer, before the uniformed man shot in the Wendy's restaurant parking lot.

The GBI identified the subject as Rayshard Brooks, 27, of Atlanta, an African-American man.

The incident started with a police call at 10:33 p.m. Friday for a man who slept in a vehicle parked in the driveway of the restaurant, causing other customers to dodge it, the GBI said in a statement.

Police gave Brooks a field sobriety test, which he failed, according to the GBI. He resisted arrest and fought with agents, the GBI said.

GBI Director Vic Reynolds reported Saturday that his department obtained surveillance video of the Wendy's incident and reviewed witness videos posted on social media.

The surveillance video shows Brooks fighting with one of the officers and then running away with what appears to be the policeman's taser, Reynolds said.

"At that point, the Atlanta agent reaches down and retrieves the gun from its holster, the discharge, hits Mr. Brooks there in the parking lot and falls," Reynolds said.

Brooks was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to the statement. An agent was treated for an injury and later released, the GBI revealed.

CNN has contacted the Atlanta Police Department and the mayor's office, but have not responded.

The GBI reported that surveillance video of the incident will be released to the public on Saturday. Reynolds said the agency is working to digitally improve the video.

The GBI is aware that there is video posted on social media captured by witnesses in this incident. We are reviewing the video & the early investigative information in this case. We'll provide an update as soon as we can.

Brooks' death comes amid global protests and discussion about racism and police use of force following George Floyd's death last month in custody in Minneapolis. Atlanta has been the site of frequent protests, including some that turned violent.

Six Atlanta police officers face charges of excessive force during a demonstration, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced June 2. Two of the officers were fired by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

"I Thought Atlanta Was Above That"

At Wendy's located in southeast Atlanta, Decatur Redd, who claims to be a relative of Brooks, spoke to journalists and crowds of people.

"I don't know how to do this because I never knew I was going to have to do this," Redd said. "I've seen this on the Internet, from the whole George Floyd situation until we got together as we are and all this landed on my doorstep with my cousin."

"I thought Atlanta was above that. I thought Atlanta was bigger than that, "added Redd."

"We have been watching this happen for many years, with young blacks from across the country dying in vain," said Redd. "I just don't want that to continue and keep happening like this."

Former Democratic candidate for Governor Stacey Abrams asked in a Twitter post to restrict the use of deadly force.

"#RayshardBrooks' death in Atlanta last night demands that we severely restrict the use of deadly force. Yes, investigations must be requested, but they must also be held accountable, ”Abrams wrote. "Falling asleep in a drive-thru should not end in death."

The Georgia NAACP said Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields should be fired immediately.

"The city of Atlanta must address this not only with its words, but also with its actions," said President James Woodall in a media call.

District attorney investigates

The GBI is investigating at the request of the APD. Once completed, the case will be turned over to prosecutors for review.

Howard, the district attorney, released a statement Saturday afternoon.

"My office has already launched an intense and independent investigation into the incident," Howard reported. "Members of the Fulton County District Attorney's Office are on scene shortly after the shooting, and since then, we have been in investigative sessions to identify all the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident."

CNN affiliate WSB reports this is the 48th shooting that the GBI investigated in 2020.

CNN's Chuck Johnston, Alex Meideros and Chandler Thornton contributed to this report.
