Call of June 18: controversy surrounding the arrival of Marine Le Pen on the island of Sein

A gathering is notably planned for Thursday morning at the pier at Audierne, where the president of the RN must take the boat to reach the island.

Thursday June 18, Emmanuel Macron will travel to London to celebrate the 80th anniversary of General de Gaulle's June 18 appeal. For its part, the president of the National Rally (RN) Marine Le Pen has planned to visit the island of Sein (Finistère). This island has a special history with the General: 128 of its inhabitants had reached England to answer his call. In the company of other parliamentarians, Marine Le Pen notably had to go to the monument erected in tribute to these inhabitants.

But this announcement aroused significant opposition in Brittany. On June 12, Le Télégramme thus reported that the official ceremonies initially planned on the island should be relocated to the continent. A decision "incomprehensible and extremely regrettable" , deplored in a press release Gilles Pennelle, the president of the RN group at the regional council of Brittany. "Especially since Marine Le Pen never intended to participate in these official ceremonies but wishes to pay tribute to the Senan sailors."

An event planned at the pier

The president of the RN therefore intends to go "as planned" on the island of Sein on June 18. But not all the islanders understand it thus. "Most of the population of the island does not wish to see it, is hostile to its arrival, and is thinking about what could be done to prevent it from coming here", explains the mayor of Sein Didier Fouquet in Ouest France.

Residents of the continent have planned to provide support to their neighbors. The mayor of the commune of Sainte-Evette, on which the Audierne pier is located, thus announces to the Telegram that "some people in the local population have expressed their desire to express their opposition to Sainte-Evette, on 18 in the morning ” .

Whether the official ceremonies are relocated or not, whether Marine Le Pen comes or not, the Senans will commemorate the call of June 18 between them. "Anyway, we are sure, we will celebrate this event, perhaps in the evening, after the departure of Ms. Le Pen, " says Didier Fouquet. " At least, after 4 pm [time of departure of the last shuttle to the mainland, note], we are quiet, we can do what we want."
