Crowded cellars, lightning strikes and evacuation of a district: summer storms and heavy rain kept the emergency services busy in many regions of Germany during the night to Sunday.

Berlin (dpa) - full basement, overflowing waters and numerous lightning strikes: storm-like rains and thunderstorms in numerous regions of Germany in the night to Sunday provided numerous rescue operations.

In the Bavarian district of Garmisch-Patenkirchen, a district of the municipality had to be evacuated. After the heavy rains there was a stream overflowing there. According to the police, dozens of residents were affected.

The fire department in Nuremberg reported about 100 missions due to the storm. Most of the cellars in the Middle Franconian city were full. The fire department in Westerstede in Lower Saxony also had to struggle with a full basement. Here the firefighters' carbon monoxide warning devices sounded the alarm. A large contingent evacuated the affected building before the all-clear could be given after a water sample was taken.

Due to the weather, the fire brigade in Berlin has counted around 40 missions since Saturday evening. Among other things, the firefighters moved out after a lightning strike to a roof truss fire. Otherwise, the rescuers mostly recorded water damage or missions due to loose components on buildings.

In contrast, the weather situation - earlier Sunday morning - had less impact on the Deutsche Bahn timetable. There were no major disruptions, the railroad said. Only on the Cologne-Bonn route there was an overhead line fault. But this is not due to the weather. "Long-distance trains between Cologne and Bonn are diverted. Sometimes the stop at Cologne Hbf is canceled," the train tweeted.

In Helmsdorf in the southern Harz, northwest of Halle / Saale, a country road was flooded after a landslide and was initially closed to traffic. In addition, trees in Saxony-Anhalt fell overturned due to severe weather - similar to Thuringia. Here the police reported, among other things, covered roofs and full basements.

Already on Saturday thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain had many regions in Germany under control. First of all, it hit the northeast. In Wismar and the surrounding area, the firefighters had around 65 deployments in the afternoon, as a spokesman for the regional control center said. More than 40 liters of rain fell there per square meter.

In Brandenburg, thunderstorms caused water damage in the regional control center for emergency calls in Eberswalde. According to the district, water ran into the building of the control center for fire and disaster protection as well as the emergency services of the counties of Barnim, Oberhavel and Uckermark.

Violent thunderstorms also discharged in neighboring countries on Saturday. In Switzerland, according to the Keystone-SDA news agency, thunderstorms initially swept over the area of Lake Geneva and brought heavy rainfall to western Switzerland. Almost 30 millimeters of rain per square meter fell locally from the sky.

For Sunday, the German Weather Service (DWD) from Franconia and Saxony over the middle to Lower Saxony again predicted violent showers and strong thunderstorms with increased storm potential. Further northeast, it stays sunny and dry for longer. Further south-west from southern Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg to the Rhineland there is regional rain with only a few thunderstorms with changing to strong clouds. The maximum values are usually between 21 to 25 degrees, in the east to 28 degrees, in the south and at sea hardly at 20 degrees.

On the night of Monday, rain from the Erz Mountains over the middle to Lower Saxony and Westphalia is possible. The temperatures drop to 16 to 9 degrees. On Monday, especially in the southwestern half, it remains cloudy with showers and strong thunderstorms.
