Berlin / Moscow (dpa) - The well-known Russian government critic Alexej Nawalny is to be treated for possible poisoning in Germany.

A special aircraft that is supposed to bring the 44-year-old from Omsk, Russia to Berlin, took off from Germany early Friday morning, as the film producer Jaka Bizilj told the dpa. Accordingly, there was also a team of doctors on board the machine. All the necessary permits for relocation from Russia had previously been issued. Navalny could still arrive in Berlin on Friday, where he will be treated at the Charité. The cost of the flight and treatment would be paid by private individuals, said film producer Bizilj.

The day before, the Kremlin critic was first taken to a hospital in the Siberian city of Omsk and, according to the doctors, was in a coma. His spokeswoman Kira Jarmysch was convinced that the opposition party was "intentionally poisoned".

Initially, there was no clear information about Nawalny's health. One attending physician spoke of a "serious but stable condition". He did not rule out poisoning. Navalny was given artificial respiration. His spokeswoman justified the move with the inadequate equipment of the clinic and raised safety concerns.
