So far it has made a name for itself with bright sunshine and tropical nights. Now the weather is changing.

Offenbach (dpa) - thunderstorms, storms and rain - after the most recently hot and sunny days in many places, the weather is about to change. Especially in the north and middle of the country it gets significantly cooler and rainy at the beginning of the week.

In Lower Saxony, a storm is approaching. "The heat of the last few days and weeks has now come to an end," said the German Weather Service (DWD) on Sunday in Offenbach.

On Monday it is often more cloudy from north to center with showers, in the north there could also be short thunderstorms. In the south, on the other hand, the DWD expects longer sunny sections and it will remain dry. Temperatures in the north reach 18 to 21 degrees, otherwise 20 to 24 degrees, with a weak to moderate wind blowing from the west.

On Tuesday, too, it remains sunny and dry longer in the south, in the rest of the country dense clouds and rain are approaching from the west, which reach the northeast in the evening. The maximum values are between 20 and 28 degrees, with the highest values in the southwest. In addition, a refreshing wind is blowing in the west, and gusts of wind are expected at the North Sea.

On Wednesday it should be very cloudy in the north with heavy rain and occasional short thunderstorms. At the North Sea it is said to be raining heavily in parts with maximum values of up to 23 degrees. In the southern half it usually stays dry with maximum temperatures of up to 27 degrees. Stormy gusts or squalls are expected, especially in the north and in the center, and heavy squalls in the mountains and on the coast. The DWD warned that special care should be taken here. Because of the trees attacked by the drought, branches could break. Falling trees must also be expected.

The rainfalls of the past few days have already shown a positive effect - albeit a small one - in some places: in parts of Brandenburg, for example, the risk of forest fires has recently decreased. In large parts of Thuringia, too, the high risk of forest fires has been banned for the time being, according to the state forestry agency in large parts of the country.

Deutsche Bahn was satisfied with the summer. "Only 0.18 percent of long-distance trains were unable to complete their journey as planned due to the heat," the company announced on Sunday. Many trains are now technically equipped for heat waves, the latest generation air conditioning systems are designed for temperatures of up to 45 degrees. "We are better prepared for the extreme temperatures than ever before," said DB Passenger Transport Board Member Berthold Huber. The lower utilization of the trains due to the corona has also provided the air conditioning and ventilation technology with additional stability.
