Ministry of Health in New Zealand has announced that for the first time in three months, a corona patient has died as a result of complications of the disease.

At the same time, five new cases of infection were reported in the country.

According to authorities, the current victim is a man in his 50s, who was hospitalized at Middlemor Hospital in Auckland about a month ago.

In recent days his condition has deteriorated, as a result of which he has been hospitalized in the intensive care unit.

Following his death, the number of corona victims in the country rose to 23 people, out of about 1,700 verified cases recorded since the outbreak of the plague.

"We understand that the current death could lead to concern among New Zealanders," said Local Health Department Director General Ashley Bloomfield. "We extend our condolences to the patient's friends and family, and support them in this time of grief."

Following the new cases of infection, Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced that restrictions on preventing the spread of corona in the country would continue unchanged until September 14.

The largest city in the state, Auckland, will remain on standby 2.5, while the rest of the state will be on standby 2.0.

“Like last time, a cautious approach is the best long-term strategy to open up our economy faster,” Arden said.

Just two weeks ago, Arden announced the postponement of the general election, which was expected to take place on September 19 to a more distant date on October 17, in the shadow of the declaration that verified Corona virus carriers were found in the country's largest city - Auckland.

The Reuters news agency reported that Arden's political rivals accuse her of using the corona plague to garner more and more support through daily TV appearances, while other politicians have difficulty getting media attention.

In a statement on the postponement of the election, the prime minister dismissed the allegations regarding the use of the plague for political purposes and said: "In the end, October 17 allows a reasonable time for the parties to prepare their campaigns.

We are all in the same boat, and we are all running in the election in the same atmosphere. "
