A Louisville, Kentucky jury today (Wednesday) decided to prosecute one of three white police officers involved in an incident in which Rayona Taylor, a black paramedic, was killed at her home in the city.

Taylor, 26, was shot in front of her partner in March after officers broke into the apartment with an "unannounced" order.

However, Officer Brett Hankison will be prosecuted only for risking human life following a shooting that hit the neighboring apartment, and not for the killing itself.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said the maximum penalty to be imposed on Hankison is five years in prison for each count.

He said the two other officers - Jonathan Mattingley and Miles Cosgrove - were not prosecuted because the investigation revealed that under state law, "they returned lethal fire" following the shooting of Taylor's partner.

"There is no doubt that this is an exciting case and turns the tummy," the attorney general said at a news conference.

Cameron is black, and Republican.

Mattingley was injured during the shooting.

The three officers broke into the house as part of a drug network investigation.

Taylor's partner, Walker, said he thought they were burglars and that the couple did not hear officers announcing their arrival, contrary to the testimony of officers and one of the neighbors.

Hankison fired ten bullets, some of which reached a neighboring apartment, where a man, her wife were pregnant and a child.

The attorney general said there was no "unequivocal" evidence that Taylor was hit by one of those bullets.

In all, she was shot six times, and ballistic investigators determined that only one of them was fatal.

The killing of Taylor, alongside that of George Floyd two months later, led to a wave of protests across the United States demanding an end to racial discrimination and excessive use of force by law enforcement agencies.

Prior to the decision of the affected group, protesters gathered in Jefferson Square Park, the focus of anti-violence demonstrations.

Mayor Greg Fisher announced a 72-hour curfew before the announcement, except for going to work or medical treatment.

"I call on everyone to demonstrate without violence and legally," the white and democratic mayor said before the announcement.

"It's clear this is an important moment for our city. I want us to think about our children and grandchildren and do it right."

Despite the requests, after the indictment was announced, demonstrations began in the city, the largest in Kentucky, with protesters shouting "no one's life matters until the lives of blacks matter".

There were sporadic clashes between the protesters and the police, and at nightfall two policemen were injured and shot.

Demonstrations broke out in other cities as well.

In May, Louisville banned police from using such orders, which allow for burglary by force without warning.

A month later, police ousted Hankison.

Outgoing police chief Robert Schroeder, who is ending his term on Oct. 1, wrote in his letter of dismissal that Hankison "demonstrated extreme indifference to the value of human life" when he "promiscuously and blindly" fired ten bullets into Taylor's home.
