The hurricane season is off to a strong start and experts believe it will be a busy year.

So far in 2020, 26 cyclones have already been detected in the Atlantic and the Caribbean and 9 of them have acquired the hurricane category, the last of them being Delta.

Being prepared for a possible emergency is extremely important, even for those who live far from the coast.

Although hurricanes lose strength once on land, they can still cause devastating storms with flooding and power outages.

The Red Cross recommends stockpiling some basic products for this type of emergency, including non-precedent foods (nuts, canned food or dehydrated soups are a good option), bottled water, copies of important documents and of course any necessary medication.

The emergency bag should contain:

  • First aid kit, and essential medicines.

  • Canned food and a can opener.

  • Minimum three gallons of water per person.

  • Protective clothing, raincoats, and bedding or sleeping bags.

  • Battery-powered radio, flashlight and spare batteries.

  • Special items for babies, the elderly, or disabled family members.

  • Written instructions on how to disconnect electricity, gas, and water if authorities advise to do so (remember that you will need a specialist to reconnect natural gas service).

Keep in mind that in this era of Covid-19 it is also important to have sanitary gel and masks or face masks in the emergency kit.
