Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on his German counterpart Heiko Maas to stop politicizing the issue of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny because it harms bilateral relations.
"The unacceptable nature of Berlin's position because it refuses to fulfill its international obligations arising from the European Convention of 1959 on mutual assistance in criminal matters and obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention," TASS news agency quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement. Adding, "It was expressed hope that the German government would refrain from further artificial politicization of this situation, which seriously harms Russian-German relations."
Navalny had previously claimed that he had been poisoned and that only elements of the Russian Federal Security Service or the Foreign Intelligence Service were able to poison him. Germany participated in these allegations, while Russia has repeatedly confirmed that the Navalny case is just an excuse to impose sanctions on it and that it was prepared long ago .
