The CDU is sending its former Thuringian state chairman Mike Mohring into the race for a direct mandate in the federal election next year.

The 48-year-old was nominated by a clear majority in constituency 191.

It includes parts of the Weimarer Land district with Mohring's hometown Apolda, the Sömmerda district and the city of Jena.

Mohring prevailed against the previous mandate holder Johannes Selle with 25 votes.

Long-time CDU member of the Bundestag Selle received 13 votes.

According to information from SPIEGEL, however, the Selle camp is considering contesting the election.

Mohring receives a new political opportunity

After the CDU was only the third strongest force with Mohring as the top candidate in the 2019 state elections in Thuringia, he resigned from the state and parliamentary group chairmanship after severe criticism.

With the nomination for the Bundestag Mohring gets a new political opportunity.

The Thuringian CDU caused a political quake in Germany in February because it voted together with the AfD in the election of FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich as short-term Prime Minister.

The defeated Selle was initially CDU member of the Bundestag from 1994 to 1998, but lost his seat with the election victory of the SPD and the subsequent formation of a red-green coalition under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

In 2009 he was again a member of the Bundestag and has been a member of parliament ever since.
