Voters trying to prevent ballot papers from being counted.

In a western democracy.

In the 21st century.

The situation was shocking so soon after the US presidential election - fueled by the president himself.

Donald Trump, US President:

"We want the voting to stop. We don't want them to find any ballot papers at 4 a.m. and add them to the list."

That was Donald Trump on election night.

He had just declared himself the winner of the vote - through alleged successes among others in Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania.

Trump was ahead here at this point, but the results were far from official.

And so America continued to count.

In Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania.

And because absentee votes were mainly missing here and mainly Democrats vote this way, Biden caught up hour after hour.

In Wisconsin and Michigan, according to the preliminary results, he is already the winner, and in Pennsylvania there is now a lot to be said for Biden.

Trump's campaign team tried to take countermeasures the day after the election.

Eric Trump, son of Donald Trump:

"We're going to win in Pennsylvania, but they're trying to cheat us."

The accusation: The Democrats would cheat manipulated postal votes for the Democrats in the count, so to speak retrospectively.

There is no evidence of this anywhere.

Numerous studies show that postal voting fraud is statistically negligible.

Nevertheless, the Trump team has already taken legal action in several states - this quickly caused criticism.

Tom Wolf, Governor of Pennsylvania:

"These attempts to undermine the democratic process are shameful."

And the population also took to the streets (placemarks) to demonstrate for compliance with the electoral system.

So far everything has remained peaceful - and definitely more peaceful than

feared

before

the election.

The police also quickly fought off troublemakers in Detroit.

But the scenes show how tense the situation is.

Biden only needs one state to win.

On Thursday, a first official result could be known in the course of the day.
