The number of victims of Hurricane Eta, which strikes Central America, and the accompanying torrential rains, floods and landslides, has risen to at least 100.
Reuters quoted a Guatemalan army spokesman as saying today, "The landslides caused by the storm buried about 150 houses and claimed 100 lives in the village of Coega in the Alta Verapaz region in the center of the country."
While Marc Connolly, representative of the United Nations Children's Fund, "UNICEF" in Honduras, "the effects of ETA will reach about 1.5 million children. This is the worst storm to hit Honduras in decades."
In turn, Max Gonzalez, minister in charge of the national system to address risks, said that about 4,000 people have been rescued, but many others are still trapped on the roofs of their homes.
For its part, the American National Hurricane Center pointed out that the eye of the storm is on the edge of the coast of Belize, heading towards the Caribbean Sea, on a path leading to Cuba and Florida early next week.
