Democratic election officials in St. Petersburg, Florida: The division has deepened the nation

Butler County and Armstrong County are two counties in the US state of Pennsylvania.
They are right next to each other and the city of Pittsburgh is around an hour's drive away.
Its population consists almost entirely of whites - in both counties Donald Trump won well ahead of Joe Biden.
But even if both counties are similar in many respects - they are examples of the shifts that ultimately made the difference in this US presidential election.
In the more rural Armstrong County, Trump was able to improve his result from 2016 by 1.3 percentage points.
In Butler County, however - with a much stronger urban structure - Biden got 3.5 percentage points more than Hillary Clinton four years ago.
Thanks to many such small gains in urban areas, Biden was able to recapture the embattled state of Pennsylvania - and ultimately win the presidential election.
Cemented ratios
If you look at the shifts in votes across the US, it is noticeable that not that much has changed compared to previous presidential elections.
The situation seems cemented.
The following map shows the increases for the Republicans as a red arrow to the right, and increases for the Democrats as a blue arrow to the left.
The length of the arrow represents the strength of the shift.
