In video: Biden wins at Arizona Republican stronghold (Photo: Reuters)

US President-elect Joe Biden won tonight (Friday) by a small margin in the Republican stronghold of Arizona.

The victory gave him 11 more electors and widened the gap between him and outgoing President Donald Trump, while the Republican continues to make baseless allegations of irregularities in the vote count.

Biden, who holds an 11,000-vote or 0.3 percent margin in Arizona, is the first Democratic candidate to win in the state since President Bill Clinton in 1996.

Four years ago, Trump won the country by a margin of 3.5%.

Arizona - home of former Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barry Goldwater who was one of the founders of the conservative political movement in the 20th century and the Republican Party's presidential candidate in 1964 - has almost never been in favor of Democrats in American history.

Before the state voted for Clinton, the last Democratic candidate to win her support was President Harry Truman in 1948.

Biden's victory underscored the political change in Arizona that has begun to lean left in recent years.

The change may come in the wake of the country's growing Latin population, a surge in residents moving to it from Democratic states like California and Illinois, and disgust at Republican Party suburbs as seen in Trump's time.

McCain's family congratulated Biden on the achievement.

"Congratulations to Joe Biden on winning my state of Arizona. I'm so proud of the residents for showing up in record numbers to make their voices heard.

His daughter posted a picture of her father with the caption: "I love people who do not lose in Arizona."
