Cuban José Abreu was awarded as the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the season in the American League of the Major Leagues, of the season that just ended.
The Chicago White Sox first baseman was one of the architects for the team to reach the postseason for the first time in 12 years.
Abreu received 21 of 30 votes for first place with a total of 374 points from the Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA).

Visibly moved Abreu is the third Cuban in history to win this award, after Zoilo Versalles in 1965 and José Canseco in 1988.

On the other hand in the National League this honor was in the hands of Freddie Freeman, who outvoted Mookie Betts, winner of the World Series with the Dodgers.
Freeman won this award playing for the Atlanta Braves, a team that had not had this individual recognition since 1999, when Chipper Jones won it.
