The federal government will also support the federal states in the coming year with the costs for refugees.

As the Bundestag decided, an additional 500 million euros will flow to the 16 federal states in 2021 through a higher share of VAT.

In addition, there is an annual grant that will rise from currently around 528 million euros to around 631 million euros in the coming years.

Smaller, financially weak federal states in particular should benefit from this increase.

In June 2019, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) reached an agreement with the Prime Minister on further financial aid.

Among other things, she had promised at the time that the federal government would continue to pay a monthly flat rate of 670 euros per person for the duration of the asylum procedure.

The same law provides the states and municipalities with additional money for the public health service due to the corona crisis.

From a total of 3.1 billion euros that Merkel had agreed with the prime ministers of the federal states, a first tranche of 200 million euros will initially flow.

Among other things, the money is to be used to increase the workforce in the health authorities.

When it comes to tracing corona patients, many overburdened health authorities currently even need support from the Bundeswehr.
