Eight policemen were injured and 64 people were arrested yesterday (Saturday) in riots across France, which took place as part of a protest against the "Security Law", which restricts the distribution of police documentation, authorities in the country said.

The demonstrators set fire to vehicles, smashed shop windows, and threw objects at police, who responded by firing tear gas.

Interior Minister Gerald Dermanin said police were dealing with "very violent people".

In a post he posted on his Twitter account, Dermanin called the protesters "thugs who are collapsing the country."

He noted that the number of protesters had dropped to about 52,000, compared to last weekend's demonstration, in which about 133,000 protesters participated.

The weekly protest across France is a nuisance for President Emanuel Macron's government, as tensions escalated following the beating of a black music producer by police last month.

The demonstrations were also attended by members of the "Yellow Vests" movement, who stood out about two years ago in the country's economic protest.

The demonstration was one of about 100 demonstrations planned across France against the new security law, in which thousands gathered in major cities, including Paris, Montpellier, Marseille and Nantes, where two policemen were wounded by a Molotov cocktail.

The clashes resumed a day after Macron's interview, in which he referred to police violence and said that "there are violent police officers" and insisted that "they should be punished".

He admitted that "when a person has a non-white skin color, his chances of being arrested are much higher, and he is identified as a problematic factor. This cannot be justified."

The French president also condemned the violence against police at a rally in Paris last weekend, which he attributed to protesters.

"Crazy people," Macron called them.

Last weekend, more than 133,000 people demonstrated, 46,000 of them in Paris alone, against the law and police violence and in favor of press freedom.

The demonstrations took place after a documentary was published in which three policemen were seen beating black music producer Michael Zeckler in his studio earlier this month.

After the incident, President Macron called the event a "shame" for France, and it was met with wall-to-wall condemnation around the world.

The four police officers involved in the incident have been arrested and are expected to stand trial.

Zackler, 41, said they also insulted him with racist curses during the incident.

The stated purpose of the "General Security" law is to provide better protection for police officers, who according to their unions are under heavy pressure after months of violent demonstrations by the "yellow vests" movement.

Demonstrations last week prompted the state administration to amend a section in the new law.

The original section of the Defense Act is intended to attract right-wing voters ahead of the 2022 election, and Macron's desire to demonstrate toughness in the area of law and order.

However, he caused a stir in the media and in the ranks of the left wing of his center-right party, as well as the human rights commissioner in the government.

They argued that the law goes too far and could deter people who want to expose police violence.

In general, many Macron supporters from the center-left are disappointed with what they see as a "conservative U-turn" in recent months.
