Despite the corona pandemic, many Germans apparently want to go abroad for Christmas.
Accordingly, Lufthansa is experiencing a booking boom.
Where are you going?
In the last week of November, Lufthansa * experienced a surge in bookings for intercontinental and intra-European flights.
Compared to the previous week,
400 percent more people had booked destinations overseas as well as southern and northern Europe
, the airline announced.
In response to the increased demand, the airline has now started or increased its flights to the respective destinations and increased the frequencies for the airports in Frankfurt and Munich.
But where do Germans really want to go over Christmas?
Corona escape: Germans run away over Christmas - Lufthansa with booking rush
Since the skiing holiday has fallen into the water for many due to the closed slopes in Germany, Austria and Italy, those who like to travel are now looking for their break elsewhere.
Because despite the corona pandemic and warnings from the government to forego domestic and international travel, flight bookings at Lufthansa have increased rapidly.
Travelers are particularly drawn to countries and areas that are not currently affected by a travel warning.
According to the airline, flights to the
Canary Islands
,
South Africa
(Cape Town, Johannesburg),
Namibia
(Windhoek),
Madeira
,
northern Finland
and
sunny destinations in the Mediterranean are
particularly popular.
A few weeks ago there was a real Corona escape, especially in the direction of the Canaries, after the travel warning for the Spanish islands was lifted and the entry regulations were relaxed.
Since then, however, all tourists are now required to submit a negative PCR test upon entry.
The island of Madeira is also one of the few islands in Europe that is not on the list of risk areas of the Robert Koch Institute.
Just like some regions of Finland and Namibia.
“The longing to travel is great worldwide.
As soon as travel restrictions fall, we see a
significant increase in bookings
.
This is especially true for the holiday season around Christmas and New Year.
Taking into account the highest hygiene and safety standards, we want our guests to fulfill their holiday dreams wherever possible.
We will therefore continue to adapt our flight schedules flexibly to demand at short notice in the coming weeks
”, explained Harry Hohmeister, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG in a press release regarding the sudden increase in bookings.
