Because of a corona infection, French President Emmanuel Macron will be in domestic isolation for the next seven days.
This was announced by the President's Office.
After the "appearance of the first symptoms" a PCR test was done, it was said.
This was positive.
Macron canceled all upcoming trips, including a planned trip to Lebanon.
However, Macron will continue to work and "ensure his activities from a distance."
Where the president was infected is unclear.
Macron last took part in the EU summit in Brussels at the end of last week and chaired a cabinet meeting in Paris.
France's Prime Minister Jean Castex has therefore also announced that he will be isolating himself as a contact person as a precaution.
Sánchez and Michel also go into isolation as a precaution
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced shortly after the announcement of Macron's infection that he would initially isolate himself as a precaution until Christmas Eve.
He had attended a dinner with Macron on Monday.
Portugal's Prime Minister Antonio Costa is also isolating himself as a precaution after contacting Macron.
EU Council President Charles Michel also met with Macron on Monday.
Michel will now also go into quarantine as a precaution, even if he is not considered to be "close contact" and was last tested negative on Tuesday, his office said.
From the office of Ursula von der Leyen, however, it was said that the EU Commission President did not plan to isolate herself.
Macron wished von der Leyen a speedy recovery on Twitter.
The 42-year-old Macron does not belong to the risk group, but his wife Brigitte does.
She is 67 years old.
Before Macron, several other heads of state had been infected with Sars-CoV-2.
US President Donald Trump spent a few days in the hospital as a precautionary measure after a corona infection, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had previously had to be clinically treated for Covid-19.
