The former world number 1 is still recovering from two knee operations and will miss the first Grand Slam of the season.

Roger Federer, the return?

The 39-year-old former Swiss world number 1 was due to resume competition at the Australian Open.

On Saturday, the organizers of the Australian Grand Slam took this for granted.

“All the best players in the world, including Roger Federer, (had) signed up to come to Melbourne,” Craig Tiley told the tournament site.

Ultimately, it will not be.

His agent indicates this Sunday to the American agency

AP

that "The Master" passes his turn.

“Roger has decided not to play the 2021 Australian Open. He has made great strides in recent months with his knee and his fitness.

However, after consulting with his team, he decided that the best decision for him in the long term was to return to competitive tennis after the Australian Open, ”Tony Godsick said in a statement.

Back to the courts at the end of February?

A priori, Federer and his teams are aiming for a return to the courts at the end of February.

Recall that the Australian Open, which was originally scheduled to start on January 18, 2021, has been postponed from February 8 to 21.

Currently world number 5 and six-time winner of the Australian major, out of 20 Grand Slam successes in total, Roger Federer has been sidelined for much of the 2020 season after two knee surgeries.
