It is the last resort: the Garmisch-Partenkirchen market has closed the slopes for the upper Kandahar.
The regulation is valid until January 10th.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
- The scenes depicts the Verena Altenhofen are hard to believe:
tourers
, by ducking under the ropes of the groomers to get ahead, the pull on the ropes, they use almost as a climbing aid.
Everything during the
ongoing preparation operation
.
On Tuesday it became too colorful for the slope workers: They consulted with those responsible and stopped working.
Too dangerous - that was the clear tenor.
You don't go on like this anymore.
"People don't stick to the barriers."
Verena Altenhofen, spokeswoman for Bayerische Zugspitzbahn AG
Garmisch-Partenkirchen: "We have long relied on the common sense of the people"
Scenes that took place on the
Kandahar
in the Classic ski area of
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
on that day - and which are becoming more and more common.
"People don't stick to the barriers," says Altenhofen, spokeswoman for Bayerische Zugspitzbahn AG.
"Fortunately, nothing has happened so far, because that would be really bad." Since the mountain railway company only has limited control, can only
put up
warning signs
and indicate the lack of safety, as there is no normal
ski operation
, the
Garmisch- Partenkirchen
acted.
The
Kandahar
, the World Cup race track on the Kreuzeck, has been closed to all winter sports enthusiasts from the start on the Kreuzjoch to the Bödele section from Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 10 January (9 p.m.) by
ordinance
.
“It's sad that you have to do something like that,” says
Elisabeth Koch
.
But the CSU mayor sees no other way out.
"For a long time we have relied on common sense, but it clearly shows that you can no longer rely on it."
The town hall chief is shocked and disappointed by the events on the
Kandahar
.
She went out twice on Tuesday to see the situation.
What did she experience?
“Completely frustrated workers who no longer want to do that to themselves.” Koch had already sent a fire letter to Prime Minister Markus Söder at the beginning of December about ski tourism.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen: The Kandahar is reserved for the DSV
The background to the increased
grooming
these days is easy to explain: The
German Ski Association
and its downhill skiers - women and men - will come to training on January 2nd for a week until January 10th.
Since the 2011 World Championships, there has been an agreement between the municipality and the
DSV
that the slope will be made available to competitive sports for a certain period of time.
“This is binding for us, and of course we adhere to it, because back then there were subsidies for the reconstruction of the route,” notes
Koch
.

In order to bring the
slope
into an optimal condition for the training of the World Cup athletes, the experts at the BZB had to top it up again.
A task for which the mountain railway company - as usual - blocks the sections in which the heavy equipment is partially traveling over cable winches.
"For this we have placed LED signs with ticker that you can't miss," says Altenhofen.
Only: "Nobody cares about them, they are ignored," complains
Koch
.
"If something happens in the process, the person in his life will no longer be happy."
Mayor Elisabeth Koch
Garmisch-Partenkirchen: "The danger is sufficiently specific"
The mayor is puzzled as to why people behave this way.
“Where did we get to?” She asks.
“That would be just as if every red light at the town hall intersection was only a recommendation.
That's crazy. ”The only way out was the prescription.
“We are the regulatory authority and we have to
ensure safety
.” As chairwoman of the supervisory board, she sees it as her duty to stand up for the well-being of the employees.
She fully understands their behavior in stopping work.
"If something happens in the process, the one who lives his life will no longer be happy." For
Koch there is
no question
that the regulation is legal
.
"The
danger
is sufficiently specific," says the former lawyer, describing the basis for the procedure.
This means that there is now also a handle for the
police
.
"Anyone who is now in this area is committing an
administrative offense
and must
expect
a
fine
."
Altenhofen also regrets such approaches.
But: “Otherwise people won't stick to it.” She refers to the other
slopes in the Classic area
that are available in the event of work on the routes.
“We even offer so much more than in other regions, where all parking spaces are closed to keep ski tourers away.” And then
rules
would
simply be disregarded
.
For the
DSV training
, the
Kreuzeckbahn
and
Kandahar-Express
will also go into operation for a short time in
the days until January 10th
.
Purely for competitive athletes, of course.
The association will also secure the stretch up to the Bödele with nets and guard it with personnel.
Because, Altenhofen now knows too well: “People are also finding ways to slip through the nets.” And that can end badly.
The problem with ski tourers is not new.
There was already trouble in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in December.
