Anyone who leaks, publishes false rumors, or communicates with suspicious pages and provides them with information or data, shall be legally responsible and may subject himself to penalties that reach imprisonment and fines.

The Ministry of Interior clarified through a statement that SANA received a copy of the legal responsibility for anyone who leaks, publishes false rumors, or communicates with suspicious pages in accordance with the provisions of the penal code and combating information crimes.

According to the ministry’s statement, Article 285 of the Penal Code stipulates that “whoever commits in Syria during a time of war or when it is expected to break out with claims aimed at weakening national sentiment or awakening racial or sectarian strife, he shall be punished with temporary detention.”

As stated in Article 286, first, “He deserves the same punishment for reporting in Syria in the same cases news that he knows is false or exaggerated that will weaken the nation’s psyche.” Secondly, “If the perpetrator considers these reports correct, his penalty is at least three months imprisonment.

Article 287 of the Penal Code stipulates that “every Syrian who is aware of the matter broadcasts false or exaggerated news that affects the prestige or financial position of the state, he shall be punished with at least six months' imprisonment and a fine of between two thousand and ten thousand pounds.”

The minimum penalty prescribed for any of the crimes stipulated in the other enforceable penal laws shall be doubled if the crime is committed using the network or it occurred on the network, or if the crime occurs on a computer or information system with the intention of affecting its work or the information or data stored on it ”according to Article 28 of the Cybercrime Law.

The Ministry of Interior called on citizens, the pioneers of social media, to be careful and cautious, and to refrain from communicating with suspicious pages that have external links or interacting with them or providing them with information or data or publishing and circulating false news so that they are not subjected to legal accountability.

The Ministry affirmed that it will pursue those who commit these acts and take the necessary measures against them in accordance with the provisions of Articles (287) (286) (285) of the Penal Code and Article 28 of the Law on Combating Information Crimes.
