That was 20 years ago - what are the stars doing today?

The visually stunning film adaptation of the novel "Lord of the Rings" by writer John Ronald Reuel Tolkien attracted millions of people to the cinemas.

With the three-part film epic, director Peter Jackson succeeded in creating a work that will last forever.

The actors in the trilogy have also been forgotten to this day.

Denethor

Denethor is the ruling stewardess of Gondor.

As a young man, he is considered bold and far-sighted.

But he changes with the death of his beloved wife Finduilas.

Denethor becomes more and more a bitter, sullen person.

His sons Faramir and Boromir feel this too.

John Noble

The Australian John Noble played the role of Denethor in the second and third part of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Elrond - the wise lord of the elves

Elrond is one of the greatest elves in Middle-earth.

After Sauron's invasion of Eriador in the middle of the Second Age, he fled to Rivendell.

Years later the assembly of representatives of all free peoples of Middle-earth takes place there.

They found the community of the ring and decide that Frodo should take the ring to Mount Doom.

His daughter Arwen later marries Aragorn.

Hugo Weaving

Elrond was played by actor Hugo Weaving.

The "Lord of the Rings" was not his first movie hit.

The 60-year-old already played a leading role in "Matrix".

As "Agent Smith" he became known to a wide audience here.

Incidentally, he was to play the character Elrond again later: Weaving was also there in "The Hobbit".

Boromir

Boromir, son of Denethor and brother of Faramir, accompanies Frodo on his way to Mount Doom at the beginning.

His greed for the ring leads, among other things, to the fact that the group of companions is broken up.

Unlike Brother Faramir, he has a good relationship with his father.

He adores him, while Faramir is seen as a failure.

Sean Bean

The Englishman has been a popular actor since the 1990s.

As a "James Bond" villain, Bean shone as well as Boromir in "Lord of the Rings".

Pippin

Peregin Tuk - just called Pippin by his friends - is one of four hobbits who set out for Mordor to destroy the ring.

The youngest of the hobbits develops more and more self-confidence as the films progress.

So he takes part in the battle in front of the Morannon and finally kills a mountain troll.

After they emerge victorious from the battle, he is knighted by Gondor.

Billy Boyd

Billy Boyd was born in Glasgow in 1968.

He got his acting breakthrough with his role as Pippin.

Then he was seen in "Master & Commander - To the End of the World" alongside Russell Crowe or in an episode of "Grey's Anatomy".

But the Scotsman is not only interested in acting, he also works as a singer, musician and composer.

Grima serpent tongue

The nickname "snake tongue" says it all.

Grima was used by Saruman to deprive the king of Rohan Théoden of any spirit.

One day Gandalf frees the poisoned ghost of Théoden, and Snake Tongue flees to Saruman.

Later, when he realizes that Saruman had only played with him, used him, he kills his masters by cutting his throat.

Brad Dourif

Brad Dourif has a weakness for embodying more or less psychopathic people.

Like Grima Worm tongue in "Lord of the Rings".

Later he was seen in individual episodes of the television series "Babylon 5", "The X Files" or "Star Trek: Voyager Spaceship".

He became famous in the USA through his voice.

He dubbed the killer doll Chucky.

As I said: a weakness for psychopathic predisposed people - or dolls.

Théoden

For a long time Théoden was controlled by his right hand, Grima Wormtongue.

This sucks the king of Rohan's courage to live.

Finally Gandalf frees him from Wormtongue.

Equipped with a new courage to live, he leads his horse army into the battle for Helms Klamm and the Hornburg.

The last king of Rohan was eventually to die in battle when his horse, Snowmane, fell on him, struck by an arrow.

He suffered severe internal injuries.

Bernard Hill

Bernard Hill - born in Manchester - has a knack for the really big films.

In addition to his role in "Lord of the Rings", he was also seen as Captain Smith in "Titanic".

Three films have won eleven Oscars so far: "Ben Hur", "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King".

Hill was on board for two out of three strips.

Galadriel

The mighty elf has a very special gift: Galadriel is a seer who can penetrate into the innermost depths of people, elves, dwarves and hobbits and who recognizes thoughts.

She does the same with Frodo.

Galadriel is in a relationship with the Elf Celeborn.

Cate Blanchett

Australian-born Cate Blanchett has been one of the most successful actresses worldwide for years.

She has already received two Oscar awards: Blanchett received the Oscar for best supporting actress in 2005 for the portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's “Aviator”.

Her role in the Woody Allen film "Blue Jasmine" won her the 2014 Academy Award for Best Actress.

The character actress also played in numerous box office hits - including the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the “Hobbit” films.

Éomer

After the death of his parents, Éomer grew up at the court of King Theoden, ruler of Rohan.

After Theoden chases his insidious advisor Grima Wormtongue from the court, Éomer becomes Marshal of the Riddermark.

And thus also appointed heir to the throne of Rohan.

Karl Urban

Karl Urban was born in New Zealand as the son of a German immigrant.

His role in "Lord of the Rings" made him known.

As a result, he was also offered more and more offers from Hollywood.

The actor has since appeared in many large productions.

Haldir

The New Zealander was also part of the cast in the successful TV series "Spartacus".

There Parker portrayed the praetor "Claudius Glaber".

Gandalf - The White Wizard

Wizard Gandalf the White is one of the most powerful characters in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

He is the ally and protector of Hobbit Frodo and his companions.

Ian McKellen

As Gandalf, Sir Ian McKellen achieved worldwide fame.

The role of Magneto in the "X Men" series also impressed many cinema fans.

But the Briton has been an award-winning theater actor for many years.

McKellen is a member of the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company.

Aragorn

As a young child, Aragorn loses his father Arathorn, who is killed by orcs.

For his protection he is brought to Rivendell together with his mother Gilraen.

There Aragorn is raised by Elrond.

Elrond did not explain his true destiny to Aragorn until he was 20 years old.

Aragorn later becomes one of Hobbit Frodo's most important companions in search of the ring.

He leads the great army in the final battle against Sauron.

Aragorn falls in love with Elrond's daughter Arwen, whom he eventually marries as the new king of Arnor and Gondor. 

Viggo Mortensen

Viggo Mortensen has not only been one of the top stars of the scene since his role as Aragorn.

The actor, who has both US citizenship and Danish citizenship, is a real all-rounder.

Mortensen also tried his hand at being a director, photographer, poet, painter and musician.

What is still missing: the Oscar.

Mortensen has already been nominated for best leading actor three times (2008, 2017, 2019).

But he has never been allowed to take the golden statue home with him.

Arwen

The daughter of Elrond and granddaughter of Galadriel saves Hobbit Frodo from the Black Riders in the first part of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

She later marries her great love Aragorn and becomes queen of the reunited kingdom of Gondor and Anor.

Liv Tyler

Actress Liv Tyler comes from a famous family.

Her father is none other than "Aerosmith" singer Steven Tyler.

Meanwhile, Liv has outgrown the rock singer's shadow and has built a respectable acting career for herself.

Even before she starred in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Tyler became known to a large audience for her role in "Armageddon".

Bilbo Baggins

Frodo's uncle bequeaths the precious ring with magical powers to his nephew.

Bilbo Baggins acts as a kind of fatherly friend and mentor for Frodo.

Ian Holm

The role of Bilbo Baggins took on in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy Sir Ian Holm.

The renowned actor was previously a successful theater actor for many years.

He is also making a name for himself in the cinema and in 1982 earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

In June 2020, Holm, who had Parkinson's disease, died at the age of 88.

Isildur

Isildur was once king of Gondor and Arnor.

When he was able to defeat Sauron in battle, he cut off his finger with the ring.

Isildur kept the ring and refused to destroy it.

He fell under the power of the ring.

Finally, Isildur was killed by orcs.

Harry Sinclair

The New Zealander Harry Sinclair took over the role of Isildur in the movie epic “Lord of the Rings.

It was to be his only major role as an actor to date.

However, from 2009 to 2013 he directed “90210”, the sequel to the extremely successful TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210” in the 1990s.

Legolas

The archer Legolas accompanies Frodo and his friends on their dangerous adventures.

The elven warrior becomes a close friend of the dwarf warrior Grimlin - although elves and dwarves are actually hostile to each other.

He also has a deep connection with Aragorn.

Orlando Bloom

Hollywood star Orlando Blum portrayed the warlike elf with a bow and arrow in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The Englishman was also involved in the “Hobbit” films.

Bloom also appeared in other blockbusters in the cinema, including the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, “Troy” and “Black Hawk Down”.

Celeborn

The Elf Celeborn has a close relationship with the magician Gandalf.

He is also the man of Galadriel.

Celeborn accompanies Frodo and his companions on their way from Middle-earth to the old west.

Marton Csokas

Actor Marton Csokas got the role of Celeborn in "Lord of the Rings".

The New Zealander is a truer specialist in action-packed movies.

In the cinema, for example, he demonstrated this in “xXx - Triple X”, “The Bourne Conspiracy”, “Kingdom of Heaven” and “The Equalizer”.

Sam Gamgee

Actually, Sam Gamgee is just Frodo's gardener in the Shire.

But he becomes his constant companion on the way to Mount Doom.

Elrond recognizes the value of the faithful, loyal friend for Frodo and makes Sam one of the nine companions.

He is the only one at Frodo's side as far as Mordor, where the ring is destroyed.

Sean Astin

US actor Sean Astin already worked as a child actor in front of the camera.

In addition to cinema roles, he also played in many successful TV series.

Astin was among the cast on "24", "Monk", "Navy CIS" and "The Big Bang Theory".

Damrod

Alistair Browning

With Alistair Browning, another New Zealander got the role of Damrod in two films of the three-part "Lord of the Rings" saga.

Browning died of cancer in June 2019 at the age of 65.

Éowyn

Like her older brother Éomer, Éowyn grew up with her uncle, King Theoden, after the untimely death of her parents.

At the Rohan court, she also learns to fight.

Her love for Aragorn ultimately remains unrequited.

Miranda Otto

First she began a medical professional training before Otto was drawn to the canvas.

Like her father Barry Otto, she started an acting career.

In addition to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “War of the Worlds”, “I, Frankenstein” and the TV series “Homeland” are among the Australian's best-known projects.

Gollum

Gollum is born the Hobbit Smeagol.

When his best friend Deagol finds a gold ring one day, it exerts a strong pull on Smeagol.

He demands that his buddy give him the ring.

Deagol refuses, and Smeagol strangles his friend.

Possession of the ring changes his personality, Smeagol becomes insidious.

The other hobbits therefore cast him out.

Over time, Smeagol's body changes, he becomes Gollum.

He finally loses his “treasure”, and Bilbo Baggins finds the ring.

Gollum tries again and again later to regain the ring.

Andy Serkis

Actor Andy Serkis gave the character of Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy a voice.

The Briton is a true specialist in the representation of computer-animated roles.

In addition to Gollum, Serkis also played the chimpanzee Caesar in three "Planet of the Apes" films.

Lindir

Saruman

Christopher Lee

Sir Christopher Lee, born in 1922, frequently played the role of villain.

So also in "Lord of the Rings" as Saruman.

As an opponent of "James Bond" or Count Dooku, a representative of the dark side of power in "Star Wars", Lee was also convincing.

The actor from Great Britain * died in 2015 at the age of 93.

Frodo Baggins

Frodo Baggins is one of the central characters in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

The hobbit receives a ring from his uncle and foster father Bilbo Baggins, the magical powers of which he initially does not recognize.

Only the magician Gandalf explains to Frodo that it is the ring of Sauron.

He leaves the safe Shire and goes with the community of the Ring to Mordor.

On the way there, Frodo survives numerous, extremely dangerous adventures and in the end can throw the ring into the fires of Mount Doom, where it is destroyed. 

Elijah Wood

For the actor Elijah Wood, the defining leading role in the three parts of "Lord of the Rings" was the breakthrough.

Wood became a world star, his prominent blue eyes his trademark.

In order to show a different acting side, the American * later took on roles with a darker side in films such as "Sin City" or "Hooligan".

Treebeard

Treebeard is a huge tree creature.

He lives in the Fangorn Forest.

The hobbits Merry and Pippin initially fail to get Treebeard to support the fight against Saruman.

The majority of the remaining tree creatures decided not to interfere in the war.

However, Treebeard brought the hobbits from the Fangorn Forest near Isengard.

At the edge of the forest, however, Treebeard saw what Saruman was doing to his forest.

Immediately he called the other tree creatures, who then razed Isengard to the ground.

Gimli: Small, but powerful!

Grimli is a skilled warrior.

As the only dwarf, he joins Frodo's companions in order to bring the ring to Mordor.

The fearless little fighter makes close friends with the Elf Legolas on the way there.

Although dwarves and elves have a strong dislike, the two become inseparable.

John Rhys-Davies

The Welshman John Rhys-Davies got a double role in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

On the one hand he played the dwarf Grimli and on the other hand lent his voice to the giant mythical creature Baumgart.

One of his best-known roles is that of Sallah in the two Indiana Jones films "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".

Rhys-Davies also appeared as the Bond villain in "The Living Daylights".

He is also considered a renowned theater actor.
