The former president of Ecuador, Gustavo Noboa Bejarano, who ruled the country from January 2000 to January 2003, died this Tuesday at the age of 83, according to Gustavo González, the former president's son-in-law, to CNN.

According to González, the former president died of a massive heart attack while recovering from brain surgery that he underwent on February 9.

Noboa passed away at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.

Lenín Moreno, president of Ecuador, regretted the death. “Ecuador is in mourning. Starting tomorrow I will decree a national mourning in memory of Gustavo Noboa, former President of the Republic. Beloved friend, respected democrat, youth moral builder, patriot. My condolences to his family and friends, ”Moreno wrote.
