The wing fight has simmered since the election failure in November 2020. But now an open power dispute has broken out in the ranks of the US Republicans: On Tuesday, the former President Donald Trump attacked the leader of the Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, and suggested his removal.
"If the Republican Senators stand by him, they'll never win again," Trump said.
He also described the politician as a "sullen, morose political bungler who never smiles."
Trump and McConnell are considered the most powerful people in the Conservative Party.
In four years of the Trump administration, McConnell had pushed through numerous projects as the majority leader in the Senate.
As a result of the election defeat, however, the alliance broke up.
After Trump's acquittal in the second impeachment proceedings, McConnell had massively criticized him publicly - even if he had previously played a decisive role in his discharge.
Among other things, he spoke of the ex-president's "unscrupulous behavior" in connection with the storming of the US Capitol on January 6th.
Now it is a question of further direction within the party.
McConnell stands for the comparatively moderate wing.
Large parts of the party, however, tend towards the populist stance and therefore remain loyal to Trump.
