The former Brexit negotiator of the European Union, Michel Barnier, is aiming for a candidacy for the French presidential elections in 2022, according to information from the Reuters news agency.

In order not to leave the topic to others, he is available for cooperation under the motto "Patriot and Europeans", said Barnier, according to Reuters, at a meeting behind closed doors with members of his center-right party Les Républicains.

A participant in the meeting told the news agency that the group had been identified as a working group within the party.

Barnier himself did not want to comment on the subject when asked by Reuters.

There are presidential elections in France next year.

None of the major parties has yet announced a presidential candidate.

Barnier is considered a possible candidate for Les Républicains.

“There's a Biden moment.

Gray hair could become fashionable, ”said a minister who wants to remain anonymous, according to Reuters.

The 70-year-old Barnier said on French radio in December that he saw his future in serving his home country.

A diplomat in Brussels told Reuters that Barnier was "actively looking into his chances" for the presidential election.
