A judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil, Edson Fachin, has ruled this Monday that the court that tried former President Lula da Silva was not competent and consequently has annulled four processes in which the veteran leader of the Workers' Party (PT) was convicted of corruption.
The ruling responds to an appeal filed by Lula.
In two of the cases now annulled, the sentence was ratified in the second instance, so Lula lost his political rights and that is why he was excluded from the electoral race that raised Jair Bolsonaro to the presidency more than two years ago.
Lula, 75, aspires to run in the next elections, scheduled for 2022.
"Politics is my DNA, only when I die will I stop doing it," Lula declared this Friday in an extensive interview with this newspaper.
The cases annulled by Fachin are those concerning a triple apartment located in Guarujá, a farm located in Atibaia (in which he was sentenced to several years in prison) and two other processes related to the Lula Institute.
The former president was convicted of corruption, for receiving perks in exchange for political favors.
Lula was released from prison, thanks to a Supreme Court ruling, in November 2019.
