The Francophonie does not adapt to maps or territories.
Its borders are blurred, its perimeter indistinct.
Since the invention of its name in 1880, its definition has continued to evolve.
But perhaps we can refer to the formula of Léopold Sédar Senghor, who gave it its modern meaning in 1962:
“It is in a word, a question of using this wonderful tool, found in the rubble of the colonial regime. .
Of this tool that is the French language.
La Francophonie is this integral humanism that is woven around the earth, this symbiosis of dormant energies from all continents… ”

Present on the five continents, the Francophonie can vulgarly be declined in two forms.
The “lived” Francophonie, which allows the sharing of a language, French, in often multilingual spaces but also of a culture, a history, values, and the institutional Francophonie, with a capital “F”, or the International Organization of La Francophonie, which brings together 88 states.
