The reactions.

  • Germany put Astrazeneca on hold - shortly after 2,200 people in Freising were vaccinated with the vaccine.

  • Freising's Lord Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher: "Don't be shy about it now"

  • District Administrator Helmut Petz: Very many are willing to continue to be vaccinated with Astrazeneca.

  • Medical spokesman Georg Miedl calls for flexible use of Astrazeneca and other vaccines.

District

- Germany is putting Astrazeneca on hold for the time being.

The decision to check the vaccine again after individual cases of thrombosis had occurred following vaccinations, particularly shook the Freising district.

Because less than 24 hours earlier, the campaign had ended, in which around 2,200 employees from primary schools and daycare centers had been vaccinated.

The FT has collected reactions to the vaccination stop:

The district administrator

"If vaccines are associated with health risks, then it is the duty of the authorities to stop," says District Administrator Helmut Petz.

“On the other hand, one must not forget the enormous damage caused by Corona.” Although he is not a doctor, he has read that the probability of thrombosis occurring is significantly higher with Corona than with vaccinations.

Petz believes that the image damage for Astrazeneca is great.

"But we get letters from a lot of people who write to us: Bring the vaccine!" Should the vaccine be taken off the market, it would be a serious blow to the vaccination strategy.

"Without Astrazeneca, the leeway is significantly smaller."

The Lord Mayor

“Of course, after the reports on Monday, I immediately thought of the big weekend event, during which employees from our daycare centers also had themselves vaccinated,” reports Freising's Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher.

"I am sure that the great relief of having received a vaccination quickly has faded into the background for many."

The motto of the OB is now not to let yourself be "shy of the head".

Health Minister Jens Spahn reported seven potentially relevant cases out of 1.6 million vaccinations with Astrazeneca in Germany.

It speaks for the German health system to take this seriously.

"But please do not overlook the terrible number of over 73,400 deaths from or with Corona across Germany and the proven protective function of vaccinations!"

The head teacher

"Before the serial vaccination, the teachers discussed the pros and cons of vaccination very intensively," says Sabine Jackermaier, director of the Neustift primary school in Freising.

Like many colleagues, she also decided to get vaccinated.

"I have not regretted it - despite vaccination reactions," she clarifies.

“I am happy that I have been vaccinated and hope that I will get an adequate second vaccination.

But it is a strange feeling that more and more countries are withdrawing the vaccine. "

The vaccination organizer

For weeks, BRK district chairman Albert Söhl has been fighting against the Astrazeneca skepticism in the population.

He and his vaccination teams have convinced dozens of people that this is a good, effective vaccine.

The vaccination ban announced on Monday hit him all the harder.

"I have now digested the decision and accept it," he says.

One now has to wait and see what the Paul Ehrlich Institute will announce on Thursday.

Until then, you will be well taken care of with Biontech and Moderna.

"In line with our vaccination interests, I hope that Astrazeneca can continue because I still consider it a good vaccine."

The doctor

"It's bitter," says medical spokesman Georg Miedl about the development.

Nevertheless, he thinks it is right to re-examine Astrazeneca under the circumstances.

“The worst thing would be to downplay something,” he emphasizes.

"As a doctor, I want to have vaccines in my hand that I can rely on."

Miedl hopes that the analyzes will now reveal patterns to which the vaccination strategy could be adapted.

“In the sense that you exclude this vaccine from a certain group of people - or only give it to those who want it.

We have to react flexibly now. "

The pharmacist

Ingrid Kaiser also thinks the Astrazeneca stop is right.

"But I think it is very important to get a result quickly in order to restore confidence in the vaccine." She herself would be vaccinated with Astrazeneca.

Especially now, when the third wave is on the march, the risk of contracting corona or even dying from it is significantly greater than a fatal side effect of vaccination.

From his own professional experience, Kaiser knows that there are always “coincidences”.

She tells of a child whose vaccination appointment could not be kept.

“The next day this child had a febrile seizure.

If it had been vaccinated the day before, everyone would have blamed it on the vaccination. "
