Champions Cup: reaction expected for Racing 92 and UBB

2021-04-03T18:34:28.203Z

Beaten last weekend in the Top 14, Ile-de-France and Girondins will bounce back on Sunday to redo the “Brexit” blow to the Scots in Edinburgh and the English in Bristol, and join the quarter-finals of the European Rugby Cup.

Racing 92, as usual

A fourth European quarter-final in four years?

This is the objective affirmed by the Sky and White.

But no question of projecting further than the match on Sunday: “We are very wary of this team, made up of Scottish internationals.

We expect a very complicated match, ”warned captain Henry Chavancy.

"We have the ambition to go as far as possible, to win this competition and it goes through this game a bit tricky: we hope to be able to move forward," added the center.

Because the Scots have weapons: they are seven to have started last week against the Blues (27-23) in the 2021 Six Nations Tournament, including the powerful winger Duhan van der Merwe.

Main absent on the Paris side, Finn Russell, suspended, will be replaced by young Antoine Gibert at the opening.

But that did not prevent the Scottish international from giving tips to his club teammates on his partners in the selection.

"Finn worked a lot with Antoine but also with Kurtley Beale and François Trinh-Duc, he gave his advice on our game but also on the game of the opposing team," assured Ile-de-France coach Laurent Travers.

UBB, like an air of revenge

We meet once again !

Defeated by these same Bears in the semi-finals of the European Challenge last season, UBB faces Bristol for the fourth time in its history on the European scene, the first in the Champions Cup.

This meeting will necessarily have a special flavor for the Lam family, represented by Pat the uncle coach of Bristol and Ben the winger nephew of Bordeaux-Bègles.

But also for Semi Radradra, who spent two years in Gironde before joining England.

But Christophe Urios' men receive the leader of the English championship as a wounded animal: after the disappointment against La Rochelle (26-11), the UBB wants to make up for it and reach the first Champions Cup quarter-final in its history.

With Matthieu Jalibert, Yoram Moefana, Cameron Woki and Cyril Cazeaux but without Santiago Cordero, victim of a dislocated left shoulder in January.

“It's the right game to bounce back.

We did not perform well on Saturday.

There we find a knockout match.

We must not get drilled.

We are competitors and it was felt at the start of the week.

We were all stunned.

But we got into reconquest mode, ”Woki explained.

The last round of 16 opposes the Scarlets to Sale.

The Welsh have won three of their four encounters against the English.

The Sharks have not won out of English soil in the European Cup since October 2008, losing 17 of their last 18 trips in total in the competition.
