In the US, more than half of adults have been vaccinated at least once. In contrast, many poorer countries hardly have any vaccine available. To change that, the country is now sharing its vaccination doses.

The US plans to deliver another 20 million doses of corona vaccine to other countries by the end of next month and take a leadership role in the global fight against the pandemic.

"We know that America will never be completely safe until the pandemic that is raging worldwide is under control," said US President Joe Biden on Monday in the White House.

By the end of June, the US would share at least 20 million vaccine doses with other states - in addition to the 60 million previously announced.

Overall, the United States would deliver more vaccine than any other country.

"And we're not going to use our vaccines to get favors from other countries," Biden said.

At the end of April, the US government announced that it would sell 60 million doses of the corona vaccine from the manufacturer AstraZeneca, which is currently not approved in the USA, to other states after approval by the FDA.

According to the White House, the 20 million additional doses of vaccine that have now been announced are from funds that have already been approved.

Pfizer / Biontech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are currently approved for use in the United States with FDA emergency approval.

Pfizer / Biontech, Moderna and AstraZeneca require two doses for full vaccination protection, while Johnson & Johnson's one dose is enough.

The US government has already released four million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to neighbors Mexico and Canada.

The US government has secured enough vaccine to supply the entire population of around 330 million people without AstraZeneca's product.
