Burma: Aung San Suu Kyi in person in court, a first since the coup

Former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi could be banned from politics, even sentenced to long years in prison.


Former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, repeatedly indicted by the junta, appeared in person on Monday (May 24) in court in the capital Naypyidaw for the first time since the February 1 coup, said to AFP one of his lawyers.

The former de facto head of the civilian government, who has so far only appeared by videoconference, has been allowed to speak directly with his defense team.

She faces charges ranging from illegal possession of walkie-talkies to violating a colonial-era state secrets law.

If found guilty, she could be banned from politics, even sentenced to long years in prison.

A sling wind suppressed in the blood by the security forces who have killed in recent months at least 818 civilians, including women and children, according to the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP).

Tens of thousands of civilians have also been displaced as a result of clashes between the army and ethnic militias, which are numerous in the country.
