The Government bowed this Thursday to the countries that supported the opening of an investigation at the
United Nations
against
Israel
and also against the
Hamas
group
for alleged "war crimes" during the recent bombings in Gaza and Israeli cities.
This month, in a statement, the Alberto Fernández administration condemned the
"disproportionate use" of force
by the Israelis without applying the same qualification to Hamas terrorism.
That position caused unrest in Tel Aviv, which was expressed by the Israeli ambassador in Buenos Aires.
The new Argentine position was expressed in a session
of the United Nations
Security
Council where it was decided to open an investigation against Israel and Hamas, which Argentina endorsed together with Mexico and Bolivia.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, also spoke in this regard, saying that the Israeli attacks that left 242 dead and 74,000 displaced could constitute war crimes.
The attacks "cast doubt on Israeli compliance with the principles of distinction and proportionality in international humanitarian law," he said.
Argentina was among 24 members of 47 who voted to open the investigation.
"We have condemned all attacks against Palestinian and Israeli civilians," said Argentine Ambassador to the UN
Federico Villegas Beltrán
.
And he spoke of the "concern" of the Fernández government for what he called "violations of international humanitarian law" by Israel.
