The Mayor's Office of Cochabamba will propose this Thursday to the Departmental Emergency Operations Committee (COED) to enter a rigid seven-day quarantine due to the increase in covid-19 cases and high hospital occupancy.

This Wednesday, the mayor of the city located in the center of Bolivia, Manfred Reyes Villa, pointed out at a press conference that there is a shortage of oxygen in hospitals, emphasizing the importance of restricting mobility.

"We are really convinced that we have to take these types of measures that can lower the wave of infections," said the official.

If there is consensus among the municipalities of the department, Reyes Villa estimates that the measure will take effect as of this weekend.

In statements made to local media this Wednesday, the mayor reported that public and private hospitals "have collapsed."

“At the Hospital del Sur we had three patients.

Today we are over 20 and we lack oxygen.

Yesterday, in a single day there were 28 deaths, "he said.

For his part, the Minister of Health and Sports, Jeyson Auza, reported this Wednesday that the National Bolivian Brewery (CBN) donated an oxygen generator that will be transported this Thursday from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba, to be installed in a hospital where they are treated coronavirus patients.

Third wave worries Santa Cruz

The third wave that affects the country worries the department of Santa Cruz, which has already completed the third day of night confinement.

This Wednesday, 43 deaths associated with the disease were confirmed in the region, the highest number of the year and one of the highest so far in the pandemic, according to Carlos Hurtado, manager of Epidemiology of the Departmental Health Service (Sedes) of the Government.

On Wednesday, 37 municipalities reported cases.

At a press conference, Hurtado added that there are 154 people hospitalized in intensive care units in the department.

The official said that they hope to continue with the vaccination campaign so that this third wave can soon be contained and return to normality.
