In Sweden, Parliament overthrows Prime Minister Stefan Löfven

When Andreas Norlén, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, hammered his desk to endorse the adoption of the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, some hesitant applause was heard.

Should we be happy to see this vote succeed or worry about this first in Swedish political life?

All observers expected this crisis.

Following very close elections in 2018, Stefan Löfven took four months to form a minority government with the Social Democrats, two small center-right parties, and the tacit support of the ex-Communist Left Party.

But no one would have bet on an offensive led by this radical left, which refused to support the government on a reform of the rent control for new housing, one of the pillars of the Swedish model.
