First place went to a Berlin architectural office: Gruber + Popp, together with the lighting planner Arup Deutschland GmbH, left the competition behind for the design of the future Martinsried underground station.

- The parking deck for the future underground station in Martinsried is currently under construction, while preparations for the construction of the tunnel and underground station are ongoing. In a restricted implementation competition, organized by the U-Bahn Martinsried Projektmanagement GmbH (PMG), according to the tender, “a holistic design concept for space-creating expansion in connection with a corresponding lighting concept in the underground area of the new Martinsried subway station should be found”.
Three participants were set, others applied to take part.
This also included the Berlin office of Gruber + Popp.
The architects' offices were selected at the end of January, and shortly after Easter they had to submit their work.
After a four-week preliminary examination, the jury met in the Kupferhaus at the beginning of May.
The eleven-person jury included mayor Hermann Nafziger, managing director Stefan Schaudig and building authority employee Ursula Janson, representing the municipality of Planegg as the client.
In addition to Dimitri Steinke from PMG and representatives from the Ludwig Maximilians University and the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art, architects and lighting planners completed the committee.
Cell structures under a microscope
The jurors awarded places one to three and awarded two recognitions. They agreed that the overall concept of Gruber + Popp and Arup appeared harmonious and integrated well into the university ensemble. The association with cell structures under the microscope seems coherent and creates a comprehensible reference to the location. Inside, organic ceiling recesses and openings characterize the new station. They contain all usage elements such as smoke extraction, acoustics and lighting. Skylights create a reference to the outside world, recesses for artificial light and lights in the ventilation shafts complement the lighting concept and ensure uniform illumination. "The design manages without any further design elements and thus creates a restrained but atmospheric interior character in a simple way",it says in a statement from the community. The cell-like structure created by Gruber + Popp also convinced the jurors above ground. "Here, the smoke extraction dome and skylights fit organically into the landscape and suggest that the open spaces will be used in a meaningful and high-quality manner," said the municipality.
In a second stage, the VgV procedure (procurement regulation) was carried out, which decides on the final winning design. The result is expected shortly. Then the winner should be presented to the public.
