At about 7 pm tonight (10th), officers from the Criminal Division of the Kowloon City Police District carried out an anti-illegal gambling operation code-named "Liting Sweeping Holes", raided a residential unit at No. 362 Ma Tau Wai Road, To Kwa Wan, and smashed a suspected illegal gambling unit. Fishing machine gambling stalls and arrested a 43-year-old man surnamed Li for "operating a gambling establishment" and violating the Prevention and Control of Disease (Regulations and Instructions) (Business and Premises) Regulations (Chapter 599F).
The other two local men in the unit and a mainland man, aged between 31 and 59, were arrested for "gambling in a gambling establishment". They were also suspected of violating the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition of Group Gathering) Ordinance. (Chapter 599G), the officer issued a fixed penalty notice to them.
The police seized two fishing machines, two shooting machines and about 5,500 yuan in cash.
All the arrested men are now being detained for investigation.
The police remind the public that under the Gambling Ordinance, Chapter 148 of the Laws of Hong Kong, anyone who runs a casino at any time is a crime. Upon conviction, the maximum penalty is a fine of 5 million yuan and imprisonment for 7 years.
Anyone gambling in a casino is a crime. Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of 30,000 yuan and imprisonment for 9 months.
The public should not try the law by their own hands.
