The Yisrael Beiteinu affair ended with a necessary sentence.

But there is still a big question mark

The sentence of Faina Kirschenbaum, who was sent to 10 years in prison, is a very important event in the war on corruption.

But alongside this exclamation mark, the question mark will always remain - how an affair whose justified name is the "Israel Beiteinu affair" ended without the chairman of the party, Lieberman - who is currently sitting on the public coffers - being investigated

In the years of our existence, we, the citizens of the State of Israel, have known endless corruption cases.

We have delivered quite well in 73 years - Yadlin, Ofer, Abu Hatzira, Hirchson, Olmert, the trial against Netanyahu (presumably innocent of course), and more and more.

But, we did not know or know of such an affair - the Yisrael Beiteinu affair, affair 242, is perhaps the ugliest and most repulsive expression of corruption in Israel, one that combines genres of bribery and theft of public funds.

True, the conviction is not theft, but the resource with which the bribery relationship between Faina Kirschenbaum and the various bodies was carried out is the coalition funds - that is, your own funds.

Therefore, the harsh sentence that landed today (Wednesday) on the head of Kreshenbaum, until a few years ago the most powerful figure in the Yisrael Beiteinu party apart from its leader, Avigdor Lieberman, is an important, significant, and hopefully also deterrent, although I would not sign it.

More on Walla!

  • After being convicted of bribery: The court sentenced Faina Kirschenbaum to ten years in prison

  • The prosecution is demanding at least 10 years in prison for Faina Kirschenbaum who was convicted of accepting bribes

Hopefully the sentence was also daunting.

The corrupt hands were sent everywhere

Let us mention just a few words the method: the parties at that time were given a budget framework of coalition funds that they could invest in areas that matched their party agenda. In practice, the money in question sits in the Ministry of Finance, and in order to withdraw it, it had to be directed directly to the supported organization. Suppose, if Yisrael Beiteinu thought that the basketball association was an organization in which to invest, Kirschenbaum would have instructed the Treasury to transfer the money in question directly to the association.

What actually happened was that Kirschenbaum and right-hand man Daoud Godowski developed a particularly corrupt system, according to which those who asked for the big money were also asked to return some of it directly to them, in various and strange ways: or in the form of hiring professionals, under a fictitious budget item (e.g. Communications consulting for Kirschenbaum), or by hiring various suppliers for them, or on flights and gifts, or renting in cash - this was dubbed by Kirschenbaum and Godowski "green".

These corrupt hands have been sent everywhere - social associations, local councils, economic societies, sports associations.

There is nothing more corrupt than that, there simply is not.

So corrupt that the investigation yielded quite a few state witnesses who decided to open, including heads of regional councils such as Gershon Mesika from Samaria, and Motzi Dahman Megillot.

The message that "this is how it works" is the most corrupting of all

But what Kirschenbaum and Godowski did was much more than that.

Not only did they get their hands dirty with public money, but along the way they also corrupted people and bodies who really wanted to do good.

The extreme example of this is the story of the Ayalim Association - an organization of motivated young people to do Zionism with their hands and feet, to fulfill visions that many of us have already forgotten, such as the Negev settlement, to contribute to the community and what not.

Matan Dahan and Danny Glicksberg are the two former Jerusalemites who have led this project for years, recruited partners, recruited supporters, and of course raised money.

On their way to building as fast as possible, they fell for Godowski and Kirschenbaum's proposals, until they dropped a token.

He went down when Daoud started asking them for cash back.

Kreshenbaum and Godowski let Dahan, Glicksberg, and other good people understand that "this is how it works."

This message is the most corrupting of all.

Especially among people who want to do good and understand that along the way they must get dirty.

I am one of those who believe that most of those we call "corrupt" today are not in the name of a degree, but in the name of a passive worker - that is, someone corrupted them, someone, like Kirschenbaum, who distributed about one billion two hundred million shekels during her tenure in the Knesset.

"It is the duty of the court to contribute its share to the war on corruption."

Judge Levy (Photo: Reuven Castro)

"Citizens, law enforcers and taxpayers will know that their money is not worthless"

"In these circumstances," wrote Judge Yaron Levy, "with all the human pain and difficulty involved, the preference for deterrence is not only justified but necessary and essential for the continued existence of a reformed and life-long society ... the court's duty to contribute to the fight against government corruption Citizens, law enforcers and taxpayers will know that their money is not no man's land and that a leader, or any public figure whatsoever, will calm his heart and reach out to public money, his needs, his family's needs, himself, his party, his relatives, his status, his benefits and the pleasures of life - The severity of the law. "

Kreshenbaum was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Tough punishment.

The elephant in the room.

Lieberman (Photo: Flash 90, Yonatan Zindel)

And after all this, one must talk about the elephant in the room, or rather, the elephant sitting on the public coffers in Israel today, MK Avigdor Lieberman. This is one of the unclear omissions in this affair, since no matter how you look at it it was the coalition funds allocated to the party that headed it.

Did he really know nothing of what had happened?

From what happened there?

In November 2016, I revealed in News 10 (today 13) the testimony of the police of Motzi Dahman, a former head of the Scrolls Council who became a state witness in the case.

Dahman talks about the devious ways in which he transferred money to lobbyist Israel Yehasha, including in kits from the Ahava company, and in date boxes, with the latter, according to his testimony, telling him that everything was done with the knowledge of the party leader Lieberman.

Wasn't that enough to call Lieberman at least to testify?

Well, the investigators and attorneys who were post-traumatic from the much-criticized critique of their failure to prove the charges against Lieberman in the straw companies case and for spreading the case for so many years did not bother to go into depth and test Lieberman's knowledge of what was happening within his party.

If so, Kirschenbaum's sentence is an important day in the war on public corruption, and yet along with this exclamation mark, the question mark will always remain - how is this affair whose justified name is the "Israel Beiteinu affair", ended without the same party leader being questioned, and even without being called to deliver Testimony at the police station.
