Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who has led Haiti since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, will resign on Tuesday and hand over power to Ariel Henry, according to the Minister of Election Affairs, Mathias Pierre.

Henry had been appointed prime minister two days before Moïse's death, but was never invested in the position.

Joseph, meanwhile, will resume his post as Haiti's foreign minister and a new government in the Caribbean country is expected to be announced on Tuesday.

Last April, President Jovenel Moïse appointed Joseph, until then Minister of Foreign Affairs, as a key man in his Cabinet with the aim of curbing the wave of kidnappings and urban crime. However, the assassination exacerbated the situation of uncertainty in the country. Although Henry had been officially appointed, Joseph was serving on an interim basis. The Constitution establishes that in the event of the death of the president, the council of ministers, headed by the prime minister, exercises executive power until the election of a new ruler. The presidential and legislative elections are called for next September 26, with the announcement of this Monday, it will then be Henry who assumes power until the elections are held.

This weekend, representatives of the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS) urged Ariel Henry to form a new government.

In a statement they expressed their desire for "all political, economic and civil society actors in the country to fully support the authorities" in organizing "free, fair, transparent and credible elections as soon as possible" and in the reestablishment of safety.

Henry was appointed on July 5 as Prime Minister but was never investigated in office.

Following the death of Moïse, his name was disputed for power along with that of Claude Joseph and Joseph Lambert, president of the Senate.
