According to section 6(3) of the Legislative Council Ordinance (Chapter 542), in order to enable the general election of the Legislative Council to be held, the Chief Executive may suspend the term of the Legislative Council before the end of the term of the Legislative Council to terminate the operation of the Legislative Council.
Considering that the 2021 Legislative Council general election will be held on December 19 this year, and the nomination period for the election will be set from October 20 to November 12 this year, to ensure that all candidates (including current members of the Legislative Council) are in Election on an equal basis, the Chief Executive has specified October 30 (the date when the nomination period starts) as the date for the suspension of the sixth legislative session.
The announcement regarding the suspension date of the Legislative Council will be gazetted on July 23.
