Former Soviet Republic: Moldova has a new pro

The former Soviet Republic of Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. In the parliamentary elections, a reform party, which stands for a pro-Western course, won. The cabinet has now been confirmed.

About a month after a landmark parliamentary election, the Republic of Moldova has a new government.

The majority of the 101 MPs confirmed 13 ministers in office on Friday, as reported by Moldovan media.

This means that President Maia Sandu can rely on the support of the government in her pro-Western course.

Your Action and Solidarity (PAS) party won an absolute majority in the vote on July 11th.

This means that there is now a clear balance of power in the crisis-ridden ex-Soviet republic that has been torn between Russia and Europe for decades.

The Republic of Moldova borders the EU state Romania and declared its independence 30 years ago.

President Sandu described the election as pointing the way.

The economist trained in the USA has declared war above all on corruption in her impoverished country.

After the election, she told SPIEGEL: "First and foremost, the public prosecutor's office must be cleaned up, because it is full of people who are influenced by corrupt clans and interest groups."

The 49-year-old was surprisingly the first woman to be elected President of Moldova last year.

It later called early parliamentary elections after the pro-Russian forces prevented their opponent Igor Dodon from forming a new government for months.
