Hundreds of residents and tourists have been removed from their accommodations because of fires around the Italian Adriatic community of Campomarino. The authorities evacuated hotels, campsites and houses in the Campomarino Lido by the sea on Sunday, as the fire brigade announced in the evening. More than 400 people were taken out of their homes. On a video of the fire brigade, you could see how thick smoke was moving through the streets and how flames were eating their way through bushes to a café. Photos showed fires near houses.
According to the fire department, a fire-fighting aircraft and a helicopter were used to fight the flames from the air.
Firefighters tried to put out the fires on the ground.
Campomarino is located on the Adriatic coast in the small region of Molise, just over 100 kilometers south of Pescara.
The fire brigade initially did not report any injuries.
In southern Italy and on the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia, devastating forest fires have been raging for days.
Heat, drought, and winds cause the flames to spread quickly.
Arson is suspected to be behind many of the fires.
Big fires are also raging in Greece and Turkey.
