A new HBO documentary is about a successful British band from the seventies made up of three brothers: Barry, Morris and Robin Gibb, and presents the difficulties brought by the success

This week, HOT and yesVOD are releasing the documentary "The BJ's: How to Fix a Broken Heart," about one of the most successful bands of all time that broke out in the 1970s.

The HBO film, which is nominated for six Emmy Awards, follows a band made up of three brothers from the Gibb family from Manchester: the older brother, Barry, and the two twin brothers, Morris and Robin.

They began performing in the late 1950s as children, encouraged by their father, who was a musician, while the family was in Australia.

In 1967, after an initial success in Australia, the family returned to Britain to ride the Beatles' wave of success - the so-called "British Invasion".

The band has released songs such as "Massachusetts", "Loving Someone" and "How to Fix a Broken Heart".

But the great success came only about a decade later, when the brothers began launching disco hits. They even won five Grammy Awards for the soundtrack to the film "Music Madness," starring John Travolta, including the prestigious award for Album of the Year. It was the first time in history that a movie soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The album included hits such as Stayin 'Alive, How Deep is Your Love and More Than a Woman.

In the early 1980s, disco began to decline after criticizing it for being a light-hearted, low-quality genre, and with it, the band's decline began. The brothers concentrated on writing big hits for other creators, such as Michael Jackson, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross and Celine Dion. Over the years, the three returned to record and perform together, and even incorporated the younger brother, Andy Gibb (who made a solo career for himself in the 1970s), but failed to recreate the glory days.

The documentary reviews the band's contribution to the music industry over the years, and incorporates behind - the - scenes stories about how their famous songs were written.

Interviewees in the film include Justin Timberlake, Liam Gallagher from Oasis, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, producer Mark Ronson and Eric Clapton - who was friends with the brothers.

Barry Gibb, now 74, is the only surviving sibling.

Andy died in 1988 at the age of 30, Morris died in 2003 of a heart attack at the age of 53, and Robin died in 2012 of cancer at the age of 62. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Barry said Clapton was the one who suggested the brothers record an album in America.

"He told us 'go to America and do not waste time on a scene in England. Go get American influence, meet American artists' - and that's exactly what we did. Our publicity was very powerful. Competition and rivalry between the brothers, by the very success, ".

Barry also said that the transition to a more rhythmic performance and singing in a high-pitched voice changed the dynamics between the brothers.

"Atlantic record company told our manager we had to put in more pace otherwise they would cancel the contract with us because they were tired of all the ballads.

"Robin did not want to give more of himself after that statement. I believe it broke his heart because it meant they would hear less of his voice, which led to those ballads. It's a cruel business, you always deal with people telling you how they want you to sing and what songs. record".

According to Barry, the band had a strong PR team, "one that went to all the major radio stations and made sure our songs were included in the playlist and jumped up the charts. Today a simple artist releases a single, no promotion. The record industry has changed, everything looks different today. "Music. Today it's just the internet. It's not the business we knew. At my age I'm glad we were able to experience it."
