In the Caribbean island, the search for survivors continues • Hospitals are having a hard time dealing with the many wounded and the lack of medical supplies • Fear: The storm will lead to landslides and make rescue efforts difficult

The scale of the tragedy in the earthquake in Haiti is

becoming clearer: the death toll from the Caribbean disaster reached 1,419 tonight (Tuesday).

The body search and identification operations are still ongoing and the number is expected to rise in the coming days.

Rescue crews are making efforts to locate survivors in the rubble, which was left behind by the earthquake on Saturday.

This is especially in light of the fact that a tropical storm is making its way to the disaster zone in the Caribbean.

The fear is that the heavy rains will cause landslides, which will make the already difficult rescue operations difficult.

An unknown number of people are still missing in the quake that hit the island with a magnitude of 7.2.

Medical teams meanwhile treat no less than 6,900 wounded to varying degrees.

Local hospitals have told CNN they are suffering from an overload and a shortage of medical supplies.

Photos from Haiti show the wounded lying on hospital beds outside the hospitals due to lack of space.

During the disaster, tens of thousands of homes were destroyed and damaged.

In addition, factories were vandalized and major roads were blocked, making it difficult to supply vital supplies to earthquake-affected areas.

Various teams are now working to rehabilitate the roads between the cities, increasing the pace of searches before the storm arrives.
