Confidante Laschet, Reul (right): »Just providing the chancellor is not enough»

One of the closest confidants of Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet has sharply criticized the election campaign of the CDU and CSU.
"We were too lazy and thought: We'll win anyway," said the North Rhine-Westphalian Interior Minister Herbert Reul on the sidelines of an event organized by the Seniors' Union in Hamburg.

Against the background of falling polls, CDU politician Reul also distanced himself from Intimus Laschet.
"We have forgotten how to fight and how to make our central concern clear," said Reul.
"Just providing the chancellor is not enough."
The SPD has overtaken the Union in the latest polls on the federal election and is now clearly ahead.
In direct comparison with SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz, Laschet is far behind.
Reul called for some kind of final offensive before the September 26 election.
"We now need a topic similar to how the Greens have the climate," said Reul.
At the same time, he was convinced that "we will be able to do this in the next few days".
Reul also sharply criticized the Greens.
Her chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock recently said that she wanted to govern with the SPD.
Reul said he wasn't surprised.
"I've never seen such a power-hungry party as the Greens," said Reul.
There it applies: "The main thing is post."
The greens would "smell that the wind is turning".
That is why they marched "in the direction of the SPD".
For a long time, black-green was considered a realistic coalition option after the election.
