Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that the Justice Department is suing the state of Texas over its new law prohibiting abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy.
The lawsuit, filed in Austin federal court, alleges that the abortion law violates the supremacy clause of the Constitution, which states that the Constitution and federal law generally take precedence over state laws.
